Born in Murmansk, Russia, Serj Ius grew up in the hauntingly beautiful city without taking the time to gaze at it. ‘The northern lights were part of our lives, we witnessed a lot of them while going for a walk, or running to school’ he says laughingly. Yet, once an adult, the mystical atmosphere that fills the Kola harbour when fog settles touches him. His splendid and mysterious photographs drape us. The light, dimmed by the mist, bathes the landscapes in a rosy halo. The snow, thick and stubborn, seems to stop time for a while. Serj Ius’s world feels almost unreal, filled with this futuristic light. ‘I feel myself dissolving in my pictures’ he tells us. A contemplative series.
