“I’ve been talking about time throughout my work. The past that’s gone, the now that we hold on to, and the unknown following in the next minutes. It is both invisible and personal. We all live in the moment while being afraid of losing it”, Wang Wei tells us. It is to make these moments last that the artist from Beijing turned to the photographic medium. By playing with aesthetics – from a blinding flash to the more sober and darker palettes of nocturnal landscapes – he freezes comical, poetic or simply absurd actions in time. “Whatever is in my pictures, what I want to capture is the ‘here and now’, this dimension reminiscent of life and death”, he explains. A creation guided by senses evoking – both literally and figuratively – Cartier Bresson’s emblematic phrase: “seizing the moment”.
